Prof. Dr. Frank Plasschaert

Dr. Frank Plasschaert has been working as a senior staff member since 2001 in the Orthopedics and Traumatology departments of the University Hospital of Ghent and of the General Hospital of Saint Jan in Bruges, Belgium. He is responsible for the orthopedics and traumatology of the child and adolescent. He is also Convention Holder for the Reference Center for Cerebral Palsy at the University Hospital of Ghent, responsible for the Movement Analysis Lab, and team member of the reference center for Spina Bifida and neuromuscular disorders at the University Hospital of Ghent,Belgium.He studied medicine at the University of Ghent (graduated in 1992) and, after training at AZ Sint-Jan in Bruges and UZ Ghent, was officially recognised and appointed as an orthopedic surgeon in 1998. After completing his education, he furthered three years in child orthopedics and traumatology at the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopedic Hospital in Oswestry (United Kingdom – Mr; Gwyn Evans) and the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto (Canada – William Cole, Robert Salter, Mercer Rank). Within the broader basis of the fellowship program, he developed a special ability and interest in the treatment of hip dysplasia and scoliosis. Prof. Plasschaert successfully performs around 100 scoliosis operations every year.He attended a research fellowship within ORLAU in Oswestry.At University of Ghent he obtained the degree of Doctor in Biomedical Sciences (PhD) in June 2010 with a dissertation on ‘The assessment of Energy Cost in Cerebral Plasy’;Dr. Plasschaert is chairman of the Belgian Association for Child Orthopedics (BAPO), board member and general secretary of the Belgian Association for Orthopedics and Traumatology (BVOT), and chairman of the Circle of Friends of “orthopaedic surgeons of Ghent”. He is a member of the ‘Old Oswestrians Club’ and the ‘Salter’s Society’. He is also an active member of the European Pediatric Orthopedic Society (EPOS).He has several highly cited publications in national and international journals within his field.
